| A true story about a Florida pastor who befriends a community of men on the sex offender registry and attempts to bring them into her flock. The production, created verbatim from interviews, walks a fine line between between sentiment and an unblinking stare into one of America's most uncomfortable subjects. Travis Russ' script and direction are both liberated and handicapped by the verbatim theater genre. He puts a lot of characters and stories in motion and they sometimes blur into one another. But the central story of a pastor trying to get to her own idea of radical christian forgiveness, healing and advocacy towards a pariah community is a powerful one. And Russ has confidently assembled a cast of strong singer/actors. Almost half of the show is made up of songs made from either the recorded interviews or taken from the Methodist hymnal and exquisitely sung. The songs and musical direction are by Priscilla Holbrook. With elegant lighting by Solomon Weisbard. Playing until Feb. 24th. |
