Liz Smith, the celebrity gossip columnist, was herself celebrated yesterday on Feb. 2 on what would've been her 95th birthday. The memorial was held at a Shubert theater as she had instructed - the Majestic - and a who's who of New Yorkers paid their respects. The audience included: F. Murray Abraham, Ben Brantley, Phil Donahue, Griffin Dunne, Cynthia Nixon, Lawrence O'Donnell, Jordan Roth, Gay Talese, Marlo Thomas, Kathleen Turner and Tom Wolfe. Among the speakers were Barry Diller, Cynthia McFadden, Holland Taylor and Renee Zellweger.

CBS' ''60 Minutes'' veteran correspondent Leslie Stahl: ''Liz forgave everyone and everyone forgave her. The exception, of course, was Donald Trump. He wanted to buy the Daily News just so he could fire her. Is there anyone he doesn't want to fire?

Bruce Willis (on his daughter Tallulah selling Girl Scout cookies: ''Liz managed to get 12,000 boxes. Her idea was to send them to soldiers overseas. ... Liz wrote this wonderful article, and I [got] those boxes to the soldiers. Tallulah still tells that story. I miss you, Liz.''

Tommy Tune (recalling the time Liz dragged him onto a dance floor at Lincoln Center): ''We became like one thing with four legs. We burned the floor and had a gay old time. We were exhilarated. We sat down, and she turned on a dime and said: ''Tommy Tune, will you sing at my funeral' And I said: 'What song?' '' And then Tune sang the Dorothy Fields and Jerome Kern classic ''The Way You Look Tonight.''

On a personal note: When I came to New York, I had the great fortune to edit Liz's column during her final years at the N.Y. Daily News. She was a class act. At Christmas, she would gift everyone on the copy desk with some booze. And once when I had a play (''Whiskey Chicken'') open in San Francisco, she surprised me by putting an item in her column about it, and how it was getting rave reviews. Last summer, after the Times ran a giant profile of her, I emailed my congrats, and she sent back a sweet thank-you note (''Love ya' for it'').

As this memorial shows, this Texan gossip queen still knows how to be the talk of the town.
