"Porn" is shorthand, but I believe -- and others have said as much -- that the film eroticizes the violent encounter. Unnecessarily. The nudity (accomplished with a body double apparently) isn't needed.
To be fair, the play does not.
I believe a play that resulted in so many injuries has some issues baked in. In order to make clear the violent intentions, the piece has to be staged with full-on cinematic fight direction. Sarandon broke or sprained her hand, and then played the show with a cast. Seeing the character already injured didn't help make a case for the suspension of disbelief. I remember the intermission conversation at the West Side Arts, the audience was fretful Sarandon would hurt herself again. Were the play stronger, or more believable, maybe we wouldn't notice. |
