| I got the script from the library a few years ago and read while listening, and I remember everything being on the recording. And what a blessing that is! This show, to me, is one of the master works of modern musical theater, and probably the most genius show written from, let's say, 1990-2015* ... even considering things I think are exceptional like Great Comet, Fun Home, Spring Awakening, Bernarda Alba, Ave Q, Light in the Piazza, The Wild Party (LaChiusa), Parade, Hedwig, Ragtime, Rent, Passion, Violet, Kiss of the Spider Woman, A New Brain, Falsettos... but I still put Caroline above them in terms of sheer genius of concept, writing and originality. I think it's fantastic you're offering it in a class for study. *Assassins and Hamilton are the ones I used as caps on each side of that timeline. I think it's better than Hamilton, and if I were to come to the conclusion it is better than Assassins (which it very well be), then Caroline's reign of genius would stretch back to 1984 for Sunday in the Park with George. So it's possible I even mean it's the most genius musical written since 1984. But who's to say! The point is I think it's just great. |
