''Hallelujah, Baby!'' is the only show to win Best Musical AFTER it closed. It wrapped up on Jan. 13, 1968; the Tonys were held April 21, 1968.

I can't imagine that ever happening again: That a show would win Best Musical THREE months after it closed. (And it hasn't since.)

Its fellow Best Musical nominees - ''The Happy Time,'' ''How Now Dow Jones'' and ''Illya Darling'' - were all running in April 1968.

Was ''Hallelujah, Baby!'' that much better than them? Or did the Tony voters want to support the racial message of the show?

''Hallelujah, Baby!'' won 5 Tonys - more than any other musical in 1968, but ''The Happy Time'' won for Actor, Direction & Choreography.

(The late '60s were also one of those odd periods where the Tonys didn't award a prize for Best Book. I wonder why.)
