As always, I agree with everything you say about Caroline, or Change. (I also agree about it being the best musical since Sunday in the Park with George, and better than Hamilton.)

The best reason I can think of for why Avenue Q won for score and book? Because it's easy. You see it once, you laugh, and you "get it." You actually don't have to think much, bc the show spells it all out. It's the epitome of the ersatz "intelligence" that characterizes much of Broadway.

True genius often doesn't come through on a first listen/viewing. Some people are able to recognize such genius with only one viewing, but that's a skill that takes years to develop, and most Tony voters don't really have this skill. Hell, back in 2003 I didn't immediately identify Caroline, or Change as the genius I now know it to be. I was intrigued enough to want to revisit it, but it wasn't until I kept listening to the cast album that it really started to sink into my soul. Of course, it has since rooted far deeper than pretty much any other show. But that didn't happen overnight.
