Regarding the Tonys... while it's impossible to take any confirmations from how the awards are doled out any given year, some years they definitely award the artistic achievement over the popular favorite. Like Light in the Piazza winning Best Score, or Ragtime, or Into the Woods, or Bridges of Madison County, or Passion winning Best Musical... or even Ave Q over Wicked, even though it meant not awarding Caroline.

Also, I'm surprised you're shocked someone like me who appreciates Caroline to the degree I do would not call Hamilton the best musical in 2 generations? That would imply I think it's better than Caroline, which I do not, though I think Hamilton is amazing and also genius, I just don't find it to be working quite at the same level as Caroline in terms of depth and emotional creativity or uniqueness of story or intention or design - though on several of those levels it's better than most musicals. Also please define what qualifies as a generation in this context.

For what it's worth, I consider the modern benchmarks of genius in musical theater (let's define the modern era as 1970 onward) to be as follows, in order:
Follies
A Chorus Line
Pacific Overtures
A Chorus Line
Sweeney Todd
Sunday in the Park with George
Assassins
Caroline or Change
Hamilton

I consider these to be above even all the exceptional, brilliant musicals I could list since 1970... these all achieved a level of creativity, imagination, and mastery in writing and conception that I consider to be a step above (the one debatable one maybe is ACL because sometimes the score isn't all that genius, but as a total package it wins a slot). I go back and forth on whether or not this list should include Company, Chicago, JCS or Evita, Falsettos, Floyd Collins, Hedwig, or Great Comet.

If we're going before 1970 my list of benchmarks of musical theater genius would include: Oklahoma, Carousel, West Side Story, Gypsy, Candide, Cabaret, and Hair... and possibly some others.
