In the context of awards, this point perhaps explains the lack of winning because for the most part one votes on the "unprocessed" product one sees and not its ambition.
Regarding your other post, thanks for all of that. I did not mean "surprise" in quite the "how could anyone?" way you took it but simply that (as I think we all do when we see something and are extremely impressed by it) I left the show thinking everyone would see what I saw (even though we all know that is never the case). And relatedly, I think it is hard to measure emotional impact objectively as evidenced by what HadriansMall wrote (and for me Hamilton was certainly way up there and I'd note that more than one of the shows in your prime-and Sondheim heavy-list have had some folks characterize as insufficiently affecting). Using your full range of "depth and emotional creativity or uniqueness of story or intention or design" I think Hamilton gets very high marks on all and we can certainly agree to disagree about the comparison of the two shows. Finally, generation=25 years was my quick shorthand. (A the substance of 2 generations can be discussed forever but seems beyond the scope here.) |
