This is such a fun show to discuss and remember!
First, I had the exact opposite reaction as you regarding there being no "And I Am Telling You..." moment. I saw the show early in the run before the recording was released and knew nothing, and distinctly remember thinking after "Lot's Wife": wow, this is exactly what it must have been like for audience seeing Jennifer Holliday perform "telling you" for the first time, before it became a famous moment :-) The audience went nuts.
I agree with everything else you said about the distance. I think something that contributed to Anika Noni Rose winning the Tony is that her character has more of an arc, you can warm to her more. I also think she was sensational.
As mentioned in other threads it's a show that may take repeated viewings/listenings to fully appreciate. I liked but didn't love it the first time. Then I heard a few songs on the recording, went back, and have been a rabid fan since. But at the end of the day, most audiences can't be expected to do this sort of research or repeat visits. |
