| No, I fully understood your affection for Hamilton. And I am not a big fan of comparisons (of these or any shows); I prefer saying "here are two great shows, yay." Where I would grumble with what you wrote is in your saying Hamilton is easier/more easily won. First of all, although I don't buy the premise, I would never rank simple storytelling as a lesser accomplishment. (I think many would say the opposite.) Secondly, I don't think Hamilton is easy at all, at least if you look at what it accomplishes in integrating history into the mosaic (the "America then/America now" idea) rather than just plot points. But as I say, no reason to have to debate a ranking. I am happy for you to place Caroline above where I would, and I would hope v/v, with the understanding that both of us rank both in the stratosphere. Finally, I don't think the voters get off the hook, but we have to recognize how the majority tend to measure greatness. |
