I remember seeing that as a kid and I thought it was just the funniest play ever. Mahoney, Kurtz, Stockard Channing, Julie Hagerty, Ben Stiller were all just perfect. For some reason the TV version doesn't really capture it all (I remember being hysterical at the nuns running up and down the aisles of Lincoln Center. Baranski didn't really replace Channing effectively and the revival.........well Edie Falco was good and that was about it.

He seemed like a nice man and yes Moonstruck was a great performance. I've heard people just rave about that production of Orphans he was in also.

That was a great production, and yes, it was much better live since Baranski had the wrong tone for it on tv in comparison to Channing on stage. Mahoney was terrific; his character is supposed to be a bad singer/songwriter, and Mr. Mahoney (whether it was his real voice or his worse version of it), had one of the worst singing voices I've ever heard--- so funny! The female version would be Candice Bergen in the film "Starting Over" (also hilarious). But Mahoney and Swoosie Kurtz were so funny and so moving in "House of Blue Leaves", and rest of the cast was wonderful, too. Of course, Mr. Mahoney was always a pleasure to watch on "Frasier" along with the rest of that marvelous cast. He was born in England, and actually started his professional career as an actor in Chicago when he was in his 40s. Rest in peace.

I first remember him in a small, but memorable performance in the Steppenwolf "Balm in Gilead," which propelled Laurie Metcalf into a Chicago star. He was always excellent.

Did anyone see Katherine Helmond do it?

She originated the role and I always saw her when I read it... I would have loved to have seen that.

I saw the original production with Katherine Helmond and Anne Meara at the Truck and Warehouse Theatre now the New York Theatre Workshop space. They were both absolutely brilliant as was the entire company. Helmond 's performance was extremely touching and Meara was hilarious as Bunny.

I saw the original and agree with Castro. It was a wonderful show -- both touching and very funny. I had out-of-town guests visiting and was looking for something to do on a cold winter night. I think it was a Sunday and there wasn't much else available. We were waiting in the lobby of the theater, still trying to get warm, when Carol Channing walked in with her husband. Soon after Michael Douglas appeared with his then squeeze, Brenda Vaccaro. Finally, Joan Rivers and her husband walked in. She was looking quite glamorous! We could hear Rivers' distinctive laugh all through the show. My guests loved the show and were equally impressed with the celebrity turnout in this small out-of-the-way theater. So was I! :) Gustave

Funny, because Baranski seemed to be channeling Joan Rivers when I saw her as Bunny!

Loved Baranski on stage and everything I saw John Mahoney do. The TV version was a misfire. My recollection is that there was no audience, which threw everything off.

No, there's an audience. It was filmed during a performance at the Plymouth.

What a wonderful actor... and what a self-effacing individual. I really liked him.

A charmer. So glad I got to see him on stage during a visit to Chicago.

I only saw him once on stage and that was his Sheridan Whiteside in Steppenwolf’s MAN WHO CAME TO DINNER in 1998. Directed by no less than James Burrows it was a memorable evening at the theater and the toughest to get ticket in town.

I saw him in The Seafarer in 2009 at Steppenwolf. Also in Chapatti at Northlight in 2014. I should have made a greater effort over the years to see him in more plays at both of these theaters.

I saw him in Orphans, The House of Blue Leaves and most recently in The Herd three years ago at Steppenwolf. He was in a play at Paper Mill not too long ago and I wish I had seen him in that. Such a fine actor.

I forgot about The Herd -- I saw him in that play also in 2015. A few times I bumped into him in the little sandwich shop that was about a half block north of Steppenwolf on the east side of the street -- he was very cordial but not overly chatty. He seemed like a nice guy.

As a Steppenwolf subscriber, I was fortunate to see him in numerous productions, most recently in The Rembrandt last fall, his final production. He seemed frail, but still gave a terrific performance. He and Francis Guinan had great chemistry as long-time partners.

Also a Steppenwolf subscriber here and always enjoyed seeing him, but will never forget his performance in The Drawer Boy in the early 2000s. It was John Mahoney, Frank Galati and Johnny Galecki and was just a really first rate production.

That's the one he did at Paper Mill too, although I'm pretty sure it was a different production. The rest of the cast certainly was different. I remember liking him but not the play.

Sorry to learn this. One film not mentioned in the obituary is Moonstruck where he played opposite Olympia Dukakis.

I remember the first time I saw him in Orphans off-Broadway, another great role that is not mentioned.
