Even the big event of the statue's head being cut off is done off-stage before the show starts. It's remarkable, and part of why I admire it so much.
I first saw it at the Public during previews, and when I saw it, one of the actors (I believe Reathel Bean, who played Grandpa Gellman) came out wearing the statue's head during Emmie's final number. I think this only happened during a week of performances, and it was certainly cut by the time it opened Off Broadway. But there was a point during which the statue's head (if not the cutting of it) appeared onstage.
But yes- your point about "not much happening" is very true. There is TONS of conflict, but it's everyday conflict, not "we have to kill the witch" conflict. |
