| She intentionally wards off emotion, and doesn't care if people like her. Precisely! Emmie says as much in the beautiful and touching Epilogue: "She stands alone where the harsh winds blow/ Salting the earth so nothing grow/ too close" Interestingly enough, this makes me warm to her even more so... because she is so tragic, so sad, so intriguing, and all I want is to give her the biggest hug every time I listen to the show. I am also keenly aware that a white, nearing middle-aged man such as myself doing so would only provoke even more anger and rage in her. In some ways, Caroline reminds me of the heroine of my (for sentimental reasons) favourite musical: Evita. Eva Peron is a prickly piece of work, but there's something irresistible about it. :) |

| It gets me every time. When the little boys start singing "shh! Mama sleepin, she work all day, don't wake mama, let her sleep" and then Emmie starts proudly (finally proud) "I'm the daughter... of a maid" it moves me so deeply. And it's even more impactful to me because Caroline isn't physically in the scene with her kids who are saying what she's love to know they think. And the last time we saw her was her having a fantasy conversation with the little white boy she works for who almost destroyed her. That section kills me too, when she says "you bet I do, Noah. You bet." and the "you bet" rhymes with his previous line "do you miss sharing a cigarette", giving him what he so desperately wants, some validation on her side of their little relationship, even though they aren't actually having the conversation! Oh and also "weren't never friends"... and "someday we'll talk again, but there's things we'll never say. That sorrow deep inside you, it inside me too and it never go away" and "so it's calm, calm, calm, and there's never any money, so it's very very calm"... that whole "Underwater" section between Noah and Caroline, oh it gets me every time too. | |

| But what makes Caroline so much more likeable because of her qualities of separation and protection is that they are there in part to help her children get through childhood in the world they live in - whether right or wrong, she is doing the best she knows how with what she has. Evita has similar aspects but hers is a much more selfish journey. | |
