Precisely! Emmie says as much in the beautiful and touching Epilogue:
"She stands alone where the harsh winds blow/
Salting the earth so nothing grow/
too close"
Interestingly enough, this makes me warm to her even more so... because she is so tragic, so sad, so intriguing, and all I want is to give her the biggest hug every time I listen to the show. I am also keenly aware that a white, nearing middle-aged man such as myself doing so would only provoke even more anger and rage in her.
In some ways, Caroline reminds me of the heroine of my (for sentimental reasons) favourite musical: Evita. Eva Peron is a prickly piece of work, but there's something irresistible about it.
