I think the expression is ''waiting with bated breath.'' ''Bated'' is a form of abated, meaning restrained. As if to hold your breath. If a fisherman keeps worms in his mouth to keep them warm (before putting them on a hook), he'd truly have ''baited breath.'' ;)
