DONNYBROOK! CD

This CD is really excellent. The sound quality is quite good. Johnny Burke's score is an underrated gem, which is somewhat surprising given that the show had a relatively brief run on Broadway. Joan Fagan, Susan Johnson, Art Lund, and Eddie Foy are all delightful -- Philip Bosco has a non-singing role as Will Danaher -- he has a bit of dialogue in the Finale.

The packaging is much better than is the custom with most imports. There are extensive liner notes including a very complete synopsis, all reprinted from the original LP, and 3 full pages of photos from the '61 production. The CD also features the 14-track instrumental album of music titled The Pete King Orchestra Plays the Music of Donnybrook!. To my knowledge this is perhaps the last highly regarded OBC recording which has never been legitimately released on CD. Stage Door Records should be congratulated for taking the risk of releasing this album and for doing such an exceptional job. Highly recommended.

So glad to hear this! I've enjoyed the Kapp original cast album for years. As you state, it's full of great songs and voices! It's hard to imagine, from the cast album alone, why this show was not a bigger hit. (Of course, I'm aware that there are many other factors that shape a musical's ultimate success.)

I can never get enough of Susan Johnson's big, brassy belt. And Joan Fagan's voice is quite lovely. As with his turn in "The Most Happy Fella," Art Lund is quite impressive.

I ordered this as soon as I saw that it was made available. I can't wait to receive it! Thanks for the good news!

Imagine a production of "Side Show" with Susan Johnson and Karen Morrow! Now THAT I would have seen!

I only know the show through it's cast recording. Like you I owned the LP and loved the score. Burke's songs do an excellent job of musicalizing the wonderful characters of The Quiet Man. Unfortunately I've never seen a staging of Donnybrook!. Some years ago when I tried to catch a performance of Irish Rep's revival, I made the mistake of not purchasing a ticket in advance. As things turned out every performance that I had an open slot to attend was sold out. I love Susan Johnson and she doesn't disappoint on this recording. This is an outstanding cast recording. You are really going to enjoy it.

I was thrilled to return home yesterday to discover that my CD, too, had arrived! I've already listened to the entire CD. As you've said, it's beautifully packaged....and the recording is first-rate! For any others unfamiliar with this score, do yourself a favor and purchase the CD! You'll be pleasantly surprised, and you'll be helping a company that's trying to preserve oft-forgotten, high-quality musical theater scores!

In addition, I was pleasantly surprised when Ms. Fagan "reappeared" on Broadway (after a lengthy hiatus) in the 2001 Broadway "Follies" revival as an understudy and replacement for several of the major roles, now performing under the name Joan Marshall.

The same folk have released MAN IN THE MOON, a puppet musical, but the score is by Bock and Harnick. Is this worth getting, has anyone listened to it? I'm about to treat myself to some CDs I've missed(SUNDAY/with Gyllenhall, also Donnybrook). I've got that LP, but My car CD is where I do a lot of listening.
