With some notable exceptions, this is a largely unsuccessful attempt to knit together some sequences from lesser known Broadway musicals, mostly from the 1960s. For about three quarters of its length, and despite the singular wit and charm of the evening's narrator, Bob Martin, the show meanders from one too long book sequence to another with very little information relayed that would help contextualize the material. It's clear the creative team wanted this to be something more than a revue, but they've ended up with something less. Very little here comes off well until Clifton Duncan snaps the show from its slumber with a plaintive, powerful rendition of "Never Will I Marry" from GREENWILLOW. Bebe Neuwirth, though not ideally cast, follows this with a spirited rendition of "Why Do The Wrong People Travel" from SAIL AWAY, and there's a rousing--and surprising--rendition of "Give My Regards to Broadway" from GEORGE M! that serves as a finale. Also, there's an encore of sorts that is especially apt and moving. Otherwise, though, this is a distinctly weak cup of tea and a misfire for ENCORES.
