In a 180-turn from TV's ''Glee'' and Broadway's ''Hedwig,'' Criss is so creepy, yet charismatic, as Andrew Cunanan.

This last episode also featured a tour de force by Cody Fern; he played David Madson, an ex-boyfriend who's terrorized by him.

(This Aussie TV and stage actor also played Albert, the lead, in the National Theatre of Great Britain's production of ''War Horse.'')

Next Wednesday promises to feature more of Finn Wittrock as Jeffrey Trail, who was Cunanan's close friend and crime victim.

A very poor script

I've been staying with this lavish, almost overproduced murder melodrama, but have yet to come up with even a hint as to why Andrew Cunanan behaves the way he does. Since it is told backwards (usually a mistake, I think) is it all being held for the last episode? I recall reading the source for the show and I think there was a lot of crystal meth, personality breakdown, delusion, etc. This is not in the show, to date, or I've been napping. The writers have given us a Cunannan who lacks the fascination of the killers in "Compulsion" or "Rope." He seems to have no motive, so he lacks interest. I feel sorry for Criss who works very hard, but is stranded in the part. What's completely lacking is the blood chilling, other worldly quality Javier Bardem had in "No Country For Old Men." Now THAT was evil. Even Mitchum half a century ago in "Night of the Hunter" was evil. This isn't cutting it for me.

That's the $64,000 question

''Who WAS Andrew Cunanan, and what caused him to kill all these people?'' For me, that's the fascination.

And it's a 9-part mini-series, so ''Assassination'' isn't spell everything out in one episode. Written by Tom Rob Smith, it's based, to a large part, on ''Vulgar Favors,'' Maureen Orth's detailed and investigative book about Cunanan. But there's a lot that isn't known, so Smith has had to take artistic license and tried to work within the parameters of what IS known. The show is not only an exploration of Cunanan's motives and mindset and obsession with fame, but also a portrait of, to some extent, gay life and homophobia in the '90s. (Frankly, I didn't follow the facts of the Versace murder at the time, so all this stuff about Cunanan's killings before that, and his backstory, is new to me.) ... Besides Criss, who's been so compelling, ''Assassination'' has featured such fine actors (and Tony winners, like Judith Light and Annaleigh Ashford). Obviously, if ''Assassination'' isn't doing for it you, it's easy to change channels. But I'm gonna see how it plays out and then I can reflect on its bigger picture.

For me the problem is moving back and forth in time. I can not appreciate Light's performance without knowing where it fits in Cunanan's story

The problem is that almost nothing is known about for certain about how or why any of it happened. This week's episode was practically made up of whole cloth because verifiable details are so scant here. For this reason, I think it was, ultimately, a poor choice of story to dramatize, fascinating though it may be.

I know it got lots of awards as and accolades, but I couldn’t get past the second episode of that series.

Perhaps you should give it another try. I found that series to be the most nail-biting piece of drama I've seen on TV in a long time despite the fact that we all know what happens. The relevance of its themes to our current political situation was creepy.
