That didn't take long... so for all who scoffed at and dismissed my assumption that this was his 7th Broadway play, I say HA!

They are following the exact same path taken by BEAUTY QUEEN .... and that didn't go too badly. Oddly, and rather wonderfully, MM is now amongst the VERY few playwrights who actually has a scintilla of name recognition to the general public -- in the UK he has a lot and is a star all by himself (as is Jez Butterworth) but I suspect even on Broadway his name counts for something and the timing of 3 BILLBOARDS represents catnip to the (very nervous, or at least they were) producers.

Yeah - now if only the play served up the brilliant or excitement or even uniqueness that some of his others have, it would be well worth the fuss.

Did anyone really scoff? Didn't we all see this coming as we waited for the Cort to announce its next occupant? But good for you for calling it so early!

Ha, I'm being cheeky.
But in my post trying to discuss how notable and unique it is that McDonagh, previously unknown before the late 1990s, has 7 (at the time of the post 6, with Hangman running off-bway at the time) *Broadway* productions of his new plays in the last 20 years... there were a couple who chose to focus on the fact that Hangmen was not on Broadway and easily might not transfer. I said that with his track record, and the large new interest in his work due to the popular and awards success of 3 Billboards, it would definitely have at least a limited Broadway run. I'm sure most people thought the same thing.

If it's true that Hangman is rushing to the Cort before Tony deadline, any guesses on what show will take the Cort in the early Fall?

I guess Reece Shearsmith would only be able to do maybe three months if he transfers......

Reece is going on tour with his comedy troupe The League Of Gentlemen in August playing theaters and arenas around the UK.

The extension at the Atlantic was only for 3 days until a Wednesday rather than an entire week, so I assume someone had a conflict and couldn't extend. Of course, it depends on what the conflict was, but that person might not be able to transfer, either.

This is a pretty weak season for plays. I'm assuming everyone is staying away from Harry Potter. There are currently 6 new plays to fill the other three nominations for Best Play: Junk, Meteor Shower, Farinelli, Latin History, John Lithgow's show, and The Children. I'm guessing the nominees would be Latin History, The Children, and Farinelli, but it's not the strongest slate.

Riedel missed John Leguizamo's Latin History for Morons in his wrap-up on the potential nominees.

The nominees will be all British, which is actually unusual these days (in some recent seasons, there have been NO British Best Play noms)

They will be: HANGMEN, THE CHILDREN, FARINELLI and HARRY POTTER --- HANGMEN should win on merit as it did the Olivier but nothing has a chance against, yawn, HP .....

What about The Parisian Woman, not as a winner nor even as a nominee but isn't it an eligible play? I am guessing the nominees will be Harry Potter, Hangmen, The Children and Latin History for Morons.

Sorry, both Riedel and I missed The Parisian Woman! If Hangmen makes the transfer, it will definitely get nominated.

The acting and other play-specific categories also don't see overly populated at the moment. There are some big guns coming in the spring, but I think there's still space for Hangmen to receive quite a bit of recognition in other categories, too.

The Parisian Woman may not be eligible for some reason. It was not listed as eligible during the most recent ruling. See link below. Don't know why this hasn't been mentioned outright, unless they're trying to just sweep it under the rug. Maybe Riedel knows for certain it isn't eligible.

Playbill strikes again. If one goes to the Tony Awards Administration site, the Parisian Woman is indeed the tenth one discussed at that meeting. Had it not been eligible, that would have been listed in the determinations.

It says so now, but it was indeed missing from the release as distributed on the day. (Which Playbill should have questioned before publishing, sure, but it's Slate or the Tony's omission.)

It is listed on the Tony Awards website

The Tony website says it was considered at the last meeting. There were no rulings related to it. So it should be eligible.

Maybe it was inadvertently omitted from an early press release that was never corrected?

Thanks for this clarification, was not aware of the release on the tony site. Yes it seems the show was omitted from an earlier press release and the Tony site was updated with it. It's not just Playbill's error as Broadwayworld as well still has the same earlier press release up.

Though in addition, Springsteen was not made eligible either, but that was to be expected despite some rumblings of the opposite.
