I had the good fortune to see Wesla many times (even before she dropped the i in Weslia) in San Francisco and New York.

Wesla would take lyrics and spin them into these long lines, suffused with feeling, and create a web of such love and longing.

Back in 1987, I produced ''Sunday After Dark With Sondheim,'' a concert presented by Musical Theatre Lovers United. It featured from performers from various Bay Area productions of Sondheim's shows (''Company,'' ''Follies,'' etc.). Plus, San Francisco cabaret stars, like Tom Andersen and Anne Tofflemire.

We asked Wesla and Mike Greensill to be our special guests. We saved ''Send in the Clowns'' for her, and they were both so exquisite.

In 1994, Charles Osgood profiled Wesla on ''CBS Sunday Morning''; for those who don't know her, her magical music speaks for itself.
