Such sad news. She was always wonderful in everything I saw her in. 61 was far far too young.

What a shock! I saw Maxwell in many things over the years, but was so pleased to see her twice (in DC and NYC) in FOLLIES. I'm so glad that her performance was preserved on such a well-done cast album.

Prior to seeing FOLLIES in New York, my best friend and I decided to stop into the Starbucks under the Marquis Hotel for a snack and some caffeine because we were having dinner after the show. And who should be in line ahead of us, but Jan Maxwell herself, going completely unnoticed. I just had to say to her "Ms Maxwell, we're so looking forward to the show tonight." She was gracious and thanked us for coming.

Just goes to show...on Broadway, you're a star at your theatre, but, a few hundred feet away at Starbucks, you're just another schlub in line for your coffee.

She was truly one of those actresses who made you happy to be able to live in New York and see her on a regular basis.

I saw Jan Maxwell in 11 shows. I think the first play I saw her in was A Doll's House. I saw her last play off-Broadway, Scenes from an Execution. She was perfect in City of Conversation, loved her in Follies. But I think I enjoyed her most in Lend Me a Tenor, The Royal Family and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang because she made me laugh so much. What a huge loss.

I don't know, but this news of her death greatly shocks me.
I didn't have the good fortune to see her in her other shows, but I am glad to have seen her in Follies.

RIP, Ms. Maxwell.

What a wonderful actress. I feel lucky that I got to see her performance in Howard Barker's THE CASTLE.

My favorite actress. I will never forget her wonderful performances. Whenever Jan Maxwell was in a play I made sure I was in the audience.

This is very sad news. One thing I was always impressed with is that she really elevated roles that she took. A part like the wife in Lend Me a Tenor or the Baroness in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang could have been completely unmemorable in another performer's hands, but not with her in the part.

I was also always impressed with the physicality she brought to roles. Not that she was running around on stage, but she really inhabited the characters down to their physical gestures. Not a lot of actors pay as much attention to that as she did.

I was fortunate enough to meet her at the stage door after Follies, and she was very gracious and kind. I told her that the thing I remembered most about Chitty, 6 years later, was not the car, but the completely deadpan way she said, "Oopsiedaisies" after accidentally shooting one of her henchmen. It was the first time I had ever seen her on stage, and it's still one of the funniest line deliveries I have ever seen.

I'm sure there are many many people who became instant Jan Maxwell from the first time they saw her perform on stage. That's what happened when I saw 16 Wounded. I was fortunate to have seen her in City of Conversation. She saved the best for last.

Absolutely, and this was also true of her performance as Elsa in THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I thought she was one of the best things about that production.

I still remember her trying to answer the phone in that role, but her cinnabon hair style was in the way! She was genius. I saw Marc Kudisch belting his heart out this afternoon at Encores! and it brings home the vicissitudes of life--he is still so strong, and she is gone. How tragic; she was so good.

This is terribly sad news. I had the good fortune of seeing her in three productions, and treasured her artistry. Her performance in The City of Conversation was especially brilliant, and should have been much more widely seen. I'm so sorry for all of her family and friends, and also for the loss of her possible future performances.

Jan was a neighbor......and I always respected her privacy. When she "retired" 2 years ago I had been tempted to ask her why but I didn't. I have always loved her work and knew she was a private person.
Several years ago I was assistant to the Producer on a the workshop of FEMME FATALE.....Some of the finest work I've ever seen from a truly STAR cast. Jan's work was particularly difficult and she was quietly amazing
I will miss seeing her in the neighborhood and just saying Hi in passing....she was always kind and soft spoken with me.
Broadway has lost a GREAT talent way to young!
I am truly sad at this loss.
Condolences to her family.

This is a sad sad day for Broadway!

Heartbreaking. She showed an unparalleled range in her theatrical endeavors and was terrific in everything I ever saw her in. I saw her shortly after she announced her retirement from the stage and she did not look well, but I am still shocked by this.

I nearly collided with her on the street once while she was playing Phyllis in Follies and, doing my best not to be intrusive, I managed to tell her how wonderful I thought she was. She seemed shy but was most gracious.

A terribly sad loss. May she rest in peace.
