Russian Arts Theater Presenting Short Stories of Anton Chekhov on Stage in New York City

After a sold-out run of The Master and Margarita, The Russian Arts Theater and Studio returns with Lady With a Lapdog, With Jokes and a Happy Ending, a comedy adapted from the short stories of Anton Chekhov. Celebrated as one of the greatest writers of all time, Chekhov's masterpieces are re-imagined for the stage by seasoned director Aleksey Burago, who leads an ensemble featuring Michael Dona, Roman Freud, Conor Andrew Hall, Luisa Menzen, Ariel Polanco, Flavio Romeo, Tom Schubert, Lana Stimmler, and Di Zhu.

While vacationing alone in the Crimean sea resort of Yalta, a Moscow playboy quickly finds himself having another affair—this time with a married woman who wanders along the shore with her pet dog. However, their lives are soon uprooted as they realize they have found true love. Interwoven around their romance are ten of Chekhov's most colorful anecdotes, including Fish, Death of a Government Clerk, Confessions, A Chorus Girl, Overspiced, A Little Joke, Daughter of Albion, Surgery, Elements Most Found in Short Stories, A Happy Ending and Life is Beautiful. Join the cast of eight colorful characters as they fumble through love, loss and the beautiful absurdity of life.

Acclaimed director Aleksey Burago, a protégé of the world famous Pyotr Fomenko, has adapted and directed many Russian literary classics in theaters around the world, including works by Pushkin, Gogol, Gorky, Dostoevsky, Bunin, Bulgakov and more. However, Chekhov is the one writer he finds himself revisiting time and again throughout his career. In the past, Burago has staged Uncle Vanya, The Bear, Swan Song, Three Sisters, The Seagull, and My Uncle Chekhov. Lady With a Lapdog has also played in HB Playwright's Foundation in 2008 as well as Bilkent University in Ankara, Turkey in 2016.

"Chekhov takes us on a journey through the complexities of the human heart. With so much chaos surrounding us, it's easy to forget that life is beautiful," says Burago.

Lady With a Lapdog officially opens on February 23rd and will play until March 10th, 2018. Performances run weekly from Tuesdays to Saturdays at 8PM, with matinee performances on Saturdays at 2PM and Sundays at 3PM, at Theater For The New City, The Joyce and Seward Johnson Theater. The venue is located at 155 First Avenue, New York, New York 10003.
