THE TONY AWARD®-WINNING MUSICAL

“THE SECRET GARDEN”

WILL MAKE ITS FIRST-EVER RETURN TO BROADWAY

NEXT SEASON

New York, NY – Producers Gerald Goehring and Michael F. Mitri announced today that the highly anticipated, first-ever Broadway revival of the Tony Award-winning musical, The Secret Garden, will open next season. With book and lyrics by Tony Award winner Marsha Norman and music by Tony Award nominee Lucy Simon, The Secret Garden will be directed, choreographed, and reimagined for a new generation by Tony Award winner Warren Carlyle.

First produced on Broadway in 1991, The Secret Garden ran for more than seven-hundred performances, snagging six Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, and winning for Best Book of a Musical, Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Daisy Egan), and Best Scenic Design of a Musical. It won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.

The Secret Garden tells the story of Mary Lennox, a young, Indian-born English orphan sent to live with her cold and distant aunt and uncle in Yorkshire. There, Mary discovers a decrepit garden, which she sets out to bring back to life. An open-hearted celebration of human connection, natural beauty, and the sheer power of joy, The Secret Garden has stirred and inspired generation after generation since Frances Hodgson Burnett first published her beloved, Victorian novel on which the musical is based.

...but I'd really love to see a CITY OF ANGELS revival...

Me too, me too. If they're going to continue to revive shows I saw as originals, I wish they'd remount City Of Angels as well. I was obsessed with that show

That's a pretty complicated (and I would think expensive) show to put on nowadays. Plus, the original cast was great, but the later replacements in the Broadway run were not up to the originals, so very strong maintenance would seem to be in order if this show were to be done again.

I imagine you're right re$ & compelxity. I know you're right re: cast as I paid the show multiple visits over the course of the run.

I just loved the show so much, even with the "meh" ending.

I'm happy too... I love this show and have never seen it live, let alone in a Broadway quality production. But my excitement is a bit curbed knowing Warren Carlyle is directing it... it's not a dance heavy show at all and I've never seen anything unique or especially exciting or inventive about what he does. I hope he does an amazing job with it, the show deserves it.

Is the heavily revised version that's been floating around...

That eliminates a good bit of the original score and minimizes the ghosts? I'm dubious but hopefully.
