Hanks will be joined by his wife, Rita Wilson, directed by Tony winner Daniel Sullivan (''Proof''), at the Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles.

By the way, as a young actor, Hanks spent three years at the Great Lakes Theater Festival in Cleveland, Ohio, onstage and behind the stage.

Hanks won the Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actor for playing Proteus in Shakespeare's ''The Two Gentlemen of Verona'' (1978).

Interesting, given that Falstaff is dead by the time HENRY V happens.

I'm assuming that they mean HENRY IV? Will it be in two parts or the stitched together version Jack O'Brien directed for LCT with Kevin Kline? (I want to say Dakin Matthews adapted it?)

In the later folios (third onward) the character is called "Fastolf", to differentiate him from a separate character in HENRY IV, PART 1 and 2 (and eventually THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR) who had originally been called Sir John Oldcastle until he Oldcastle Family objected to the nomenclature and the name of Prince Hal's dissolute friend was changed to Falstaff, thus instigating the character in HENRY VI (written long before HENRY IV) having his name changed from "Falstaff" to "Fastolf".

If Tom Hanks is going to play "Fastolf" in HENRY VI, Parts 1, 2 & 3, it'd be a bit lopsided casting-wise.

Now we know about the history of the name change from "Fastolf" to "Falstaff": your error was for good!

Yes, I agree. But that still leaves the much bigger question--at least to me: Tom Hanks as Falstaff??!!

One of the reasons Falstaff is such a memorable character is that he is so complex: many different attributes jumbled in one fat man. We've all seen Hanks portray qualities like the warmth, love of life, and humor of Falstaff (the things that draw Hal to him); the huge ego masking the inner weaknesses are not generally traits in Hanks' film characters, true--but the guy's a veteran. I'm gonn try to see this.

My cat is named Hotspur. :)

So glad I got to see Pat Carroll play Falstaff in The Merry Wives Of Windsor. Memorable still nearly 28 years later.
