Spelling mutilations aside, that's a thoughtful, lovely piece on a great lady.

There are no copy editors anywhere anymore.

There are, but they're steadily being let go because, hey, you can just go in and change a mistake online as soon as someone complains. Let your readership do the work!

A few years ago, I remember reading about a Florida newspaper that was notorious for its many typos.

It was so bad that the paper decided to hold a contest: the reader who could spot the most typos, would win a steak dinner.

Needless to say, offering readers a steak dinner is so much cheaper than hiring a professional copy editor.

More and more, newspapers consider copy editors expendable, along with entertainment critics.

And now we hear the N.Y. Times will go all-digital and the print edition could be gone within a decade ...
