Cost-cutting newspapers are dropping the copy editors

A few years ago, I remember reading about a Florida newspaper that was notorious for its many typos.

It was so bad that the paper decided to hold a contest: the reader who could spot the most typos, would win a steak dinner.

Needless to say, offering readers a steak dinner is so much cheaper than hiring a professional copy editor.

More and more, newspapers consider copy editors expendable, along with entertainment critics.

And now we hear the N.Y. Times will go all-digital and the print edition could be gone within a decade ...
