Despite the megabucks that LCT has no doubt lavished on the scenery and costumes in its current revival, when I attended this past Tuesday night they needed the help of at least three men to stabilize the table top on which Mr. Butz dances (a couple of brief soft shoe steps- or was he trying to tap?) during the "Get Me to the Church on Time" number. While two men (stagehands or cast members) lie flat on the stage grasping the table's two upstage legs, the other (more obvious one), stands at stage edge (in alignment with the aisle as to not to block audience view) and presses down hard on the table top to steady it. I noticed that this same stagehand was mouthing some of the words to the song. Butz could just as well have danced his jig on the stage floor. I hope they can fix this during previews.

Also, as may have been noted elsewhere, Sher has included three male dancers in drag can can costumes during this big number in Act 2. Not sure why.

As for Mr. Butz's performance? It confirms my opinion that Andrew Rannells should have been awarded the 2011 Tony for best performance by an actor in a musical.

While I prefer to, and did, sit up close, I think MFL at the Beaumont would best be viewed from mid to rear orchestra. I think some of the set pieces (Covent Garden, the pub, etc) and choreography would look better from a distance.

The large orchestra sounds wonderful - perhaps the best part of the show. Sher puts the orchestra on stage during the "Embassy Waltz" number, which is an unexpected, but interesting touch.

An altogether enjoyable evening, despite some pacing and other issues that can be addressed.

Haven't seen this ''My Fair Lady,'' but I agree 100%: ''Andrew Rannells should have been awarded the 2011 Tony for Best Actor in a Musical.''

I've seen ''The Book of Mormon'' many times now, but Rannells was something special. His ''I Believe'' was so comical, and he sounded spectacular.

Butz was entertaining in ''Catch Me If You Can,'' but Hanratty really is a Featured role, and should've been ruled as one by the Tony committee.

To me, Aaron Tveit deserved that Best Actor nomination; ''Catch Me'' is all about Frank's dramatic arc, and his ''Goodbye'' gave me goosebumps.

Thank you for your insight. I now know a great deal about a wonky table. And of course the novel idea that an award for one performance should be judged by an actors performance in another completely different show. That will certainly add a whole new dimension to the prize giving season.
A point about the men in drag - in British music hall tradition female impersonation (and vice versa) was a pretty common occurrence so perhaps a nod to that?

What does Butz's performance in MFL have to do with his performance in CMIYC?

That table really has to go. Very awkward, and unnecessary to the number. Otherwise, loved the show - including Norbert.
