SHREK - Why did it flop??
Posted by: wagnerboy 02:36 pm EDT 04/02/18

I am considering doing SHREK as a musical in our community theatre. I never saw it live but just watched the DVD taped with the original cast in front of an audience. I loved it. Really fun, charming, colorful. I am confused as to why it had such a short run and lost it's entire investment. Why did people not flock to see it? Has it had success in other productions? Tours? Stock? Regional? Is there something I am missing? My instinct is it could sell as well as some of the other kid-friendly shows like MARY POPPINS and R&H CINDERELLA... but clearly I am off base... Is it that it does not appeal to moms or girls? Seriously, I am really baffled but this.
Any insight anyone has (or encouragement would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!!

not exactly sure where you live but here in Phoenix this show is done constantly by schools, youth theatres, community theatres and even our big (very good with equity contracts) dinner theatre did it a season or two ago. So while this show may have not been successful on Broadway it seems like it's found a huge life in regional/community theatre.

While I agree with some of the other comments that some of the score isn't that great, there are definitely some memorable tunes plus a fun, funny and upbeat story and characters that people clearly know already from the series of films.

I saw this on Broadway and I don't know if one of the main reasons it wasn't so successful is because it's basically just a retread of the film, with songs. It lacked the majesty of Lion King and the magic of Beauty and the Beast.

The key difference being that Seussical was an original and ambitious musical, rather than just a popular movie on stage with songs.

The co producer Neal street productions (Sam mended and others) has had mostly flops like Enron, Charlie and chocolate factory. I think Red is the only play that actually recouped without much profit. They are producing the ferryman this fall. Charlie might not have been as big a loss since it had two other producers and cost less than shrek ( I think was reported to be $25m which seemed very high even 10 years later).

Lion king, Mary poppins and little mermaid

Were playing when shrek opened in December 2008. It did play a year in one of the biggest houses--Broadway theater, so not a disaster like some other kid shows that closed within a few months of opening. But Billy Elliot was getting all the attention having just opened and one could argue that the boy demographics were shifting in that direction.

As for the show, it's cute but I never bought the cd; so I must have felt the score was weak while watching the show.

Similar story for SPONGEBOB?

Sounds somewhat similar, where the show is relatively strong and there's an audience in theory, but at this particular moment folks are busy with Lion King, Aladdin, Mean Girls, Anastasia, Harry Potter, and Frozen. Thoughts?

I don't think spongebob would do well even without competition. It did make just over $1m last week. But phantom took in $1.6m for school week! Frozen was almost $3m. SpongeBob is another musical I didn't buy the cd. For this season, I did buy bands visit and once on this island revival.

No show is everyone's cup of tea, but broadly speaking, the word on Spongebob is largely positive. That's why I think the parallel works. And I think most of the many, many other screen-to-stage properties on Broadway (save maybe Bronx Tale and School of Rock, though their grosses were staggering last week) have stronger pull right now.

SpongeBob won't. I'm a little surprised Bronx tale isn't doing better. It Is having good run on Broadway and the tour will probably do well in subscription houses, but I don't think it is making enough to recoup. But the score works for Bronx tale and I'll see it on tour. I never want to see spongebob again. And I throughly enjoyed Aladdin tour stop a few months ago. Although I doubt I'd sit through frozen again--I was disappointed in the production.

what will develop an audience. While I can see the reasons why, my heart is still surprised that Bronx Tale and School of Rock are still on Broadway, but Something Rotten! closed and super stunned that Bandstand is gone. That show was terrific. Add so it goes.

So no surprise to me that bronx tale survived and both are probably around the same running cost. Something rotten was 3 seasons ago (fun home win and nothing is still opened now) and school of Rock two seasons ago (with waitress and Hamilton still open).

Something Rotten would have been better off waiting a year and coming in when a more appropriate theater was available. The St. James has become a white elephant, although maybe Frozen will change its luck. I liked it a little more than you did.

Though SpongeBob's grosses have been mighty low-- they posted just over 1 million for last week. First time for that. I'm sure it's due to spring break.

It has sold well other places than Broadway ... it just wasn't interesting enough or good enough for Broadway at that time.
