BROADWAY BACKWARDS tonight

After years of reading about this event and watching excerpts online, I was delighted to attend one in person at last!

Wayne Brady, slated to host (and to sing "There Are Worse Things I Could Do" from GREASE!), didn't show. Neither did Lea Salonga (slated to sing "Maria"). Julie Halston covered the hosting duties.

ACT 1

"A Wild, Wild Party" (Lippa WILD PARTY) -- Shawna Hamic, Christian Dante White and Company

"Ice Cream" (SHE LOVES ME) -- Tony Yazbeck, in what sounded like the original key!

"She Touched Me" (DRAT! THE CAT!) -- Anneliese van der Pol, working hard for the full Barbra effect

"Therapy" (TICK, TICK . . . BOOM!) -- Noah Galvin and Nico Tortorella

"Reviewing the Situation" (OLIVER)! -- Julie Halston (hamstrung by her dependence on a music stand)

"If My Friends Could See Me Now" (SWEET CHARITY) -- Jay Armstrong Johnson, sharing a lead-in scene with John Glover, and (eventually) doing what we were told was the complete original Fosse/Verdon staging! -- absolutely delightful

"And I Was Beautiful" (DEAR WORLD) -- Len Cariou, in a key too low even for him (obviously so that he could make it through the "high" parts)

"If I Were You" (ALL AMERICAN) -- Andrea McArdle and Sharon Wheatley

"My Girlfriend Who Lives in Canada" (AVENUE Q) -- Andrea Martin, transcending the music stand limitation more skillfully than Julie Halston did

"The Lady Is a Tramp" (BABES IN ARMS) -- Ethan Slater and Company -- totally adorable, with impressively elaborate choreography

ACT 2

"One Boy" (BYE BYE, BIRDIE) -- Gaelen Gilliland and Eric Petersen, with Heather Lee Bair and Marty Lawson (the number was cleverly reconceived; I was disappointed when Julie Halston failed to offer a "BI BI" BIRDIE joke afterward)

"Joey Is a Punk Rocker" (THE BLACK SUITS) -- Will Swenson, trying too hard

"Dear Theodosia" (HAMILTON) -- O. Smith and Astrid van Wieren

"Waving through a Window" (DEAR EVAN HANSEN) -- Betsy Wolfe

"What about Love?" (THE COLOR PURPLE) -- Michael McElroy and Bryan Terrell Clark (really beautifully sung and effectively staged)

"Don't Rain on My Parade" (FUNNY GIRL) -- Joey McIntyre (who tore off his jacket at the end of the number to reveal a black T-shirt reading "EQUALITY" in golden letters)

"Who Will Love Me As I Am?" (SIDE SHOW) -- Telly Leung and Taylor Trensch (nicely done, with T.T. on top, so to speak)

speeches by "special guest" Hayley Mills and event director Robert Bartley

"This Is Me" (THE GREATEST SHOWMAN) -- Alex Newell and Company (Newell's looking and sounding more and more like Jennifer Hudson!)

I'm kind of shocked that Broadway Backwards and Miscast would both close with Alex Newell singing "This Is Me," only a week apart. And isn't anyone else tired of that song yet?

I have been going to BROADWAY BACKWARDS for years, and this was the best ever. my highlights:

GOLD MEDAL to jay Armstrong Johnson who perfectly recreated gwen verdon's entire IF THEY COULD SEE ME NOW from SWEET CHARITY.....what a monumental task, fully realize. incredible, really, and john glover doing the vitorio vidal part so complemented the finished product....just pray there is video someday of this on youtube for all theater buffs to enjoy. playbill credits mimi quilllin for recreating fosse choreography for jay. but jay gets the gold for outstanding work for the love of the theater for one night only performance. thanks, jay.

SILVER MEDAL to titus burgess with a moving rendition of HAPPINESS IS JUST A THING CALLED JOE....bravo mr. burgess

BRONZE MEDAL to TONY YAZBACK doing Barbara cook's signature VANILLA ICE CREAM.....the guy can do anything....sing, dance, act....please bring him back to broadway.....he was so fantastic in Prince of Broadway.
