Hayes Theatre?

Does anyone know why Second Stage has decided to rename the Helen Hayes Theatre the Hayes Theatre? I know that they are looking to sell the naming rights but why drop Helen?

Does anyone know why Second Stage has decided to rename the Helen Hayes Theatre the Hayes Theatre?

Any truth to the rumor that the American Airlines Theater is now just called the "Airlines Theater"? :)

I forget where I read it, but it was my understanding it hasn't been officially renamed - they just call it the Hayes. I swear my Playbill from Lobby Hero included the Helen on the cover, but the images at Playbill show it as The Hayes Theater. I'm even more confused that it was Theatre and is now Theater.
Link In looking for information, I found this Variety article that has a photo of the inside of the (Helen) Hayes Theater(re), for those who haven't seen it.

A couple of months ago, I asked the Second Stage press agent about this and was told that the theater name had NOT been officially changed: It was still the Helen Hayes, but Second Stage had chosen to refer to it as the Hayes. Since then, I have seen conflicting evidence as to whether or not "Helen" is still part of the name, so I am not sure if the official position has changed.

On a related note, as others have pointed out, there is a sort of precedent for this: e.g., the Barrymore.

it's the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, just as it' the John Golden Theatre, The Eugene O'Neill Theatre, the August Wilson Theatre, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre - despite our referring to them as the Golden, the O;Neill, the Wilson, and the Schoenfeld.

Second Stage on the other hand, while they were painting the inside of the theatre an odd blue and buying crushed velvet seats (waiting for the velvet paintings of Helen Hayes to arrived from Vegas), have officially dropped the Helen from Helen HAYES, and also ... sadly for me - the HAYES is the only theatre on Broadway that spells theatre as 'theater'. Why?

The hope is that with a few more shows like lobby hero they will have sell the theatre so it can become a 'real' Broadway house again.

The Beaumont—excuse me, the Vivian Beaumont—is also an -er, previously Broadway's only.

SirPupNYC you are correct about the Vivian Beaumont - as well as the Mitzi Newhouse. Both are designated as 'theaters' by LCT, which is also, Lincoln Center Theater. Although every other site I have found calls them 'theatres'.

The Public is a 'theater' and all of their venues are 'theaters'. It's Second Stage Theater.

But it's The Manhattan Theatre Club; The Signature Theatre (Linney Theatre, Diamond Theatre , etc); The Vineyard Theatre; Roundabout Theatre with American Airlines Theatre, Stephen Sondheim Theatre etc;

My favorite is Jujamcyn Theaters - resolutely using the American spelling. But all of their venues use the other spelling - Neil Simon Theatre, St James Theatre, Walter Kerr Theatre etc

In American English, ER is currently the correct spelling. Note however that proper names do not have "correct" spellings. It makes perfect sense to me that Second Stage, a company focused on American plays, would choose to name itself and its constituent parts with the American rather than Anglo spelling. It can also be noted that I have chosen to use RE though it is not correct, for personal reasons.

It should be noted that IBDB lists it as "Theatre," but they are wrong.

"It's the Ethel Barrymore Theatre."

Yes, that's what I meant. It's the Ethel Barrymore, but many (most?) people refer to it as the Barrymore, and may not even know which Barrymore it is named after.

Let's face reality. Most theatergoers don't know any of the Barrymores. Except Drew.

as rehearsed in the earlier thread, the Barrymore signage does not include Ethel's name though it is the official name. The comparable theatre name is the Broadhurst.

As per my post below, it would seem the agent was correct at the time, as the official change has come since the earlier thread on this subject. There is no longer any conflict as the shortened name (and the juxtaposed spelling) is what is now registered with the League.

I had posted that ibdb, which provides the official league name, listed it as the Helen Hayes. However I now see that it has been changed there, to the Hayes TheatER. I have no idea why. Maybe they hope they can sell the naming rights while retaining Hayes, which would be easier than retaining both names.

Years ago, when Joe Papp took over the Vivian Beaumont, in an effort to seem less elitist, he changed the spelling from "Theatre" to "Theater." I was an administrative assistant there, and the joke around the office that next Joe would switch the E and R in "Shakespeare" to "Shakespeaer" to be consistent.
