I had posted that ibdb, which provides the official league name, listed it as the Helen Hayes. However I now see that it has been changed there, to the Hayes TheatER. I have no idea why. Maybe they hope they can sell the naming rights while retaining Hayes, which would be easier than retaining both names.
Years ago, when Joe Papp took over the Vivian Beaumont, in an effort to seem less elitist, he changed the spelling from "Theatre" to "Theater." I was an administrative assistant there, and the joke around the office that next Joe would switch the E and R in "Shakespeare" to "Shakespeaer" to be consistent.
