| All the best to Doris -- what a wonderful triple threat performer who still holds the record for biggest female box office movie star of all time. Her dancing is sometimes not praised as often as her singing, but her films especially with Gene Nelson show her to be wonderful hoofer as well. Her charm, beauty, sense of humor, naturalness and great talents are a testament to how much people all over the world love her. Happy birthday, Doris! | |

| Loved her in Love Me Or Leave Me. Great dancing and songs. What a great broadway musical that would be. Thinking of Kelli O'HARA as Ruth Etting and Pacino as the Gimp. Try to see the movie | |

| I wish the Motion Picture Academy would honor her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. I gather she wishes to stay out of the public eye these days so she may have declined to receive one, but it would be wonderful if she would come back for one night so we could celebrate her amazing body of work. | |

| .....but she declined them. Obviously her choice but she is one of the only great stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood not to receive one. I always love explaining her career to younger people: when you lay it all out, her range of work and huge stardom really are amazing. But how lovely that she seems so well and happy in her late 90s! You know, she is lovely reminder of when stars were once an unattainable commodity. Without TV and the internet to shove every actor's face down our throats 24/7, that greatest generation of stars- the Hepburns and Grants and Stewarts and Crawfords- had an air of specialness about them that only Daniel Day Lewis still kind of holds. (Much as I love Meryl, she is no shrinking violet and seems to be everywhere.) I love that s sighting of Doris Day is an event. |

| The Kennedy Center made an exception for Irving Berlin. He may have been too old to travel to Washington. Perhaps that is viewed as mistake. And it probably was a mistake. |

| It's been reported that Day repeatedly turned down the Kennedy Center Honors because her fear of flying kept her from attending. From Wikipedia: ''In November 2015, one month before the ceremony, the Eagles postponed their honors until the following year because Glenn Frey had intestinal problems that required major surgery and a long recovery. Despite their absence, they were still honored in 2015 via a performance of "Desperado" by Miranda Lambert. Frey died on Jan. 18, 2016, though the Center made him and the three surviving members 2016 honorees.'' As for Berlin, I don't think it's ever a mistake to honor a national treasure. I hope the Kennedy Center isn't waiting until Doris Day turns 100 to make another exception. |

| Tom O'Neil of GoldDerby.com says Doris Day has privately told the Academy that if she were given a special Oscar, she wouldn't attend. I wish the Academy were flexible enough to allow her to accept such an honor via a remote at her home, or with just audio of her. And even if Doris didn't want to do either of those, the Academy oughta give it to her anyway, just for the record books. After all, you can win an Oscar without appearing in L.A. to accept it; Glenda Jackson and Woody Allen are just 2 examples. O'Neil says Doris' last award appearance was in 1989 at the Golden Globes, and she gave a gracious speech. Doris, then 65, even hinted that she might work again and that ''the best is yet to come.'' |

| You know how Hollywood works -- they probably considered Day too much of a lightweight in '55 despite her stunning performance. They made it up to her in '59 by nominating her for Pillow Talk. They did same thing for Bette Davis -- overlooking her in '34 for Of Human Bondage but then nominating and awarding her the Oscar in '35 for the much weaker Dangerous. There are countless examples of this happening over the years. | |
