| it's the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, just as it' the John Golden Theatre, The Eugene O'Neill Theatre, the August Wilson Theatre, the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre - despite our referring to them as the Golden, the O;Neill, the Wilson, and the Schoenfeld. Second Stage on the other hand, while they were painting the inside of the theatre an odd blue and buying crushed velvet seats (waiting for the velvet paintings of Helen Hayes to arrived from Vegas), have officially dropped the Helen from Helen HAYES, and also ... sadly for me - the HAYES is the only theatre on Broadway that spells theatre as 'theater'. Why? The hope is that with a few more shows like lobby hero they will have sell the theatre so it can become a 'real' Broadway house again. |

| The Beaumont—excuse me, the Vivian Beaumont—is also an -er, previously Broadway's only. | |

| SirPupNYC you are correct about the Vivian Beaumont - as well as the Mitzi Newhouse. Both are designated as 'theaters' by LCT, which is also, Lincoln Center Theater. Although every other site I have found calls them 'theatres'. The Public is a 'theater' and all of their venues are 'theaters'. It's Second Stage Theater. But it's The Manhattan Theatre Club; The Signature Theatre (Linney Theatre, Diamond Theatre , etc); The Vineyard Theatre; Roundabout Theatre with American Airlines Theatre, Stephen Sondheim Theatre etc; My favorite is Jujamcyn Theaters - resolutely using the American spelling. But all of their venues use the other spelling - Neil Simon Theatre, St James Theatre, Walter Kerr Theatre etc |

| In American English, ER is currently the correct spelling. Note however that proper names do not have "correct" spellings. It makes perfect sense to me that Second Stage, a company focused on American plays, would choose to name itself and its constituent parts with the American rather than Anglo spelling. It can also be noted that I have chosen to use RE though it is not correct, for personal reasons. | |

| It should be noted that IBDB lists it as "Theatre," but they are wrong. From the source: |

| "It's the Ethel Barrymore Theatre." Yes, that's what I meant. It's the Ethel Barrymore, but many (most?) people refer to it as the Barrymore, and may not even know which Barrymore it is named after. |

| Let's face reality. Most theatergoers don't know any of the Barrymores. Except Drew. | |

|
| as rehearsed in the earlier thread, the Barrymore signage does not include Ethel's name though it is the official name. The comparable theatre name is the Broadhurst. | |
