Years ago, when Joe Papp took over the Vivian Beaumont, in an effort to seem less elitist, he changed the spelling from "Theatre" to "Theater." I was an administrative assistant there, and the joke around the office that next Joe would switch the E and R in "Shakespeare" to "Shakespeaer" to be consistent.
