It's been reported that Day repeatedly turned down the Kennedy Center Honors because her fear of flying kept her from attending.
From Wikipedia: ''In November 2015, one month before the ceremony, the Eagles postponed their honors until the following year because Glenn Frey had intestinal problems that required major surgery and a long recovery. Despite their absence, they were still honored in 2015 via a performance of "Desperado" by Miranda Lambert. Frey died on Jan. 18, 2016, though the Center made him and the three surviving members 2016 honorees.''
As for Berlin, I don't think it's ever a mistake to honor a national treasure.
I hope the Kennedy Center isn't waiting until Doris Day turns 100 to make another exception. |
