Had it not opened too late for the 1959 Tonys, it surely would have won several awards, including best musical and best leading actress in a musical, the latter even over the tough competition from Gwen Verdon.

I saw Gypsy and The Sound of Music in August 1960. It may have been decided by number of tickets sold and the love of R&H and Martin.
