Shelley Winters' Effect of Gamm Rays

Why was this such flop? She seems like a natural for the role.

Odd thing I noticed: Carol Kane played the lead daughter Matilda when she was 26. Odd. I guess she must have been ok. She got a Drama Desk nomination.

Irene Dailey originated the role of the Mother in Chicago and won the Sarah Siddens award for her portrayal. Yes that SS award made famous in "All About Eve". (sorry not sure how the award's name is spelled) It was and maybe still is a Chicago award). Have no idea why it was used instead of The Tony in "Eve". At any rate Irene didn't get to play it in the New York production. Sada Thompson was the Mother. Sada had been a queen of Regional Theaters for year and "Gamma Rays" finally got her talents recognized in New York leading of course to "Twigs" and her Tony.

The Sarah Siddons Award was invented by Joseph L. Mankiewicz for the film "All About Eve." Two years later when a group in Chicago started to give out awards for theater, they used the name and design of that statue.

They could have given Eve a Donaldson Award which was a prestigious award and the precursor of the Tonys (since the Tonys weren't very established in 1950 having just started a year or two prior). The Donaldsons overlapped the Tonys for a number of years before being phased out in favor of the Tonys.

Funny to see this post, I was thinking about this play recently too.

It's interesting that only a few years earlier the play won the Pulitzer and had a long run Off Broadway. I gather this wasn't any sort of a transfer to Broadway but rather a completely new production. It does seem it should have been a perfect vehicle for Winters. The film adaptation with Joanne Woodward, directed by Paul Newman was released sometime between the Off Broadway and Broadway productions, so maybe it was just too soon or over exposed at the time to be of interest?
