I saw Part One two weeks ago and wrote a lengthy post about how I felt the design and direction stifled the text and the performances.
I was thrilled to find that Part Two is almost diametrically opposed to its predecessor - abstract and fluid, allowing the performances to soar. I quite enjoyed the ensemble use of angel movers to swipe the sets in and out, and I thought the final reveal of Heaven was extremely interesting. A much more vivid and creative use of the space and performers. I am in the camp that believe Kushner could use a bit of judicious editing in this second half, but the four hours flew by. If you can, I strongly recommend seeing both parts in one day - I wish I had.
It was also a treat to see Ben Shenkman ('Louis' in the HBO film) in the audience - I would love to hear his thoughts on the evening! |
