The Tony committee announced there would be no nominees for Best Actress that year because there was only one eligible performer. All the other performers were considered according to billing. Either no one petitioned to be considered in a different category or the requests were denied. In a direct slap to Ben Vereen, the committee announced there would be no Best Actor award because they did not consider any of the performances to be worthy of a nomination. Ditto for choreography.
