Weren't Nolen and Stubby Kaye above the title too? They could have been nominated as lead also, no? (didn't see it so don't know the size of the roles but billing was lead.) I didn't realize Harrigan and Hart was that year. So Groener and Hammil were that bad they didn't merit a nomination? They must have been making some political point. I doubt this would happen nowadays.

You are correct. Ben Vereen, Timothy Nolen and Stubby Kaye were all billed above the title, along with Leilani Jones, in ''Grind.'' But I've always understood that the Tony committee has the discretion to place performers where they see fit, petition or not. Groener and Hamill were below the title of ''Harrigan N' Hart,'' but since they're the title characters, they should've been leads. For the record, the Drama Desk Awards nominated both Groener and Hamill for Best Actor, alongside Jenkins & Richardson. And it nominated 4 actors from ''Big River'' for Featured: Auberjonois, Goodman, Gunton and Short. Plus, Nolen from ''Grind.''

were both wonderful in the show and should have been eligible - and perhaps nominated - for leading actor. Never understood that year and its lack of Best Actress and Actor fiasco. Jim

Baffling. The performers got better notices than the show, but the only aspect that got a Tony nomination was the Book, which was panned. And since the Tonys chose to nominate only 3 shows for Score, they could've nominated only 3 for Book ... but didn't. Go figure.
