| Gibberish, but with the kind of loopy brilliance that Stoppard imbues in his texts. Not entirely cohesive, but if you don't even try to understand what is going on, you can take in the broader entertainment - almost as if you were watching a farce in a foreign language. I appreciated the echoes of Wilde/'Earnest', but found it mostly lost among the Lenin stuff. Discussions of class, art, politics ... I guess? In the long run, I won't remember much (if anything) about this text, but the performances are mostly excellent. Not sure if the design and direction coalesces, but I'm not mad I spent 2.5 hours with this experience. |

| Stoppard, the snob. He preaches to a very narrow congregation. If so, then I'm proud to be a part of it. I think Arcadia is one of the greatest and most beautiful plays of the 20th century. Travesties is difficult to come to as a young theatregoer, but becomes deeper and richer as you get older and more informed. Looking forward to seeing this, my third or fourth (maybe fifth?) production of it. |

| Saw the original, starring John Wood, on my first trip to London, in 1975. I had some historical background going in, and I got some of the jokes. But, I certainly didn’t get it all (probably never have). It was intriguing enough, though, that I kept looking for opportunities to see other productions. And, my enjoyment of it deepened with each viewing. Bill, in San Diego |

| I think it's tough to generalize. I saw Travesties in 1975 at the Ethel Barrymore. I was 17. I thought it was terrific. If I were seeing it for the first time now. I'm not sure I'd feel that way. Of course, the quality of a production, and the choices made, also affects people's responses. When I was 17, I'm sure that I felt very smart to like it, and the fact that I didn't get everything didn't bother me, just as it didn't bother me at Jumpers a few years before or at Home in 1971 or Old Times later that year. And, again, a production's choices enter into people's responses. I sat at the revival of Jumpers with Simon Russell Beale watching people steadily stream out during act one. In that case, I certainly felt that the production was partly at fault. | |

| Yes, God forbid some of us go to the theatre to have our minds stretched and enjoy having to work a bit to get more out of the evening. Geez, no wonder Disney is everywhere. | |

| He preaches to a very narrow congregation. They're extremely thin and many of them can fit into a single pew? |

| I love this play (and this production) but admit it took me two viewings and a bit of internet research to fully grasp what was going on. I recommend not going in cold. There's probably something in the program (or at least I hope there is) giving some context to the goings on. But I would definitely research the play on the internet before going. | |

| Agree strongly. Once you are passing familiar with the social and political history the play covers, the plot and dialogue are astonishingly funny and to the point. But, to the casual observer, not so much. The dialogue is dense and rich, so be prepared. | |

| I'm seeing it tomorrow. The Roundabout has a guide to the play on their website that I plan to read first. | |

| My daughter did her senior honors thesis on it; she's praying this production gets broadcast! Laura |
