Saw the original, starring John Wood, on my first trip to London, in 1975. I had some historical background going in, and I got some of the jokes. But, I certainly didn’t get it all (probably never have). It was intriguing enough, though, that I kept looking for opportunities to see other productions. And, my enjoyment of it deepened with each viewing.
