| Does anyone think Renee Fleming has a chance at anything come awards season? Who would she be against in the featured actress category? |

| She's good in "Carousel," but she's following some wonderful women in the role who made equal, or bigger impressions. Comparisons are odious and also inevitable. I don't think this is a performance that would go down in theater history, save the footnote, i.e. the presence of a major opera diva's career switch (yes, I know she did the flop play; this is Fleming singing, and one of musical theater's most famous and moving songs.) I predict no Tony nomination, but respectful and respectable reviews. |

| Denyce Graves played/sang Nettie in the Chicago Lyric Opera production and was fine. Ms. Fleming is also fine. The role is often, even in the original, essayed by a mezzo soprano our opera diva for the obvious requirements of the song. The problem with the Chicago production was that Princess Cruise ship lumbering in the background of Soliloquy. No one has ever been able to explain that one to me. | |

| If Fleming were Tony-nominated, her biggest competition probably would be LIndsay Mendez, her co-star in ''Carousel.'' Other possibilities: Kenita Miller (''Once on This Island''); Bryonha Marie Parham (''Prince of Broadway''); Diana Rigg (''My Fair Lady''); Kate Rockwell (''Mean Girls''). And then there's the question of ''Frozen'': Will Caissie Levy be eligible for Leading Actress or Featured Actress in a Musical? |

| I notice that no previous Mrs. Higginses have been nominated for a Tony. (Cathleen Nesbitt played her twice- in 1956 and then in 1981- and then Brenda Forbes and Dolores Sutton.) If Dame Diana did get nominated, would she be the first actress nominated in a musical who never sang a note? (Unless she is singing Ascot Gavotte in this production?) And I haven't read any of the books about the creation of MY FAIR LADY, but did L&L ever pen a song for Mrs. Higgins? I can imagine there being a spot for it in the scene with her and Eliza at the end. "Show Me" or "Without You" could have been restructured to be song by Mrs. H. to Eliza? |

| Maybe Diana Rigg will be the first Mrs. Higgins to be Tony-nominated. She does have a Tony history as a past winner (''Medea'') & 3-time nominee. If we go back to the original post in this thread, no performer playing Nettie has been Tony-nominated, nor for Billy Bigelow or Julie Jordan (!). |

| She won the Tony without singing a note. Boyd Gaines was nominated without singing. Can't remember if he won. I think Savion Glover was nominated for Noise/Funk without singing. | |

| I didn't think she was that good. Totally missed the character and poor singing. I don't see her getting nominated. | |
