She's good in "Carousel," but she's following some wonderful women in the role who made equal, or bigger impressions. Comparisons are odious and also inevitable. I don't think this is a performance that would go down in theater history, save the footnote, i.e. the presence of a major opera diva's career switch (yes, I know she did the flop play; this is Fleming singing, and one of musical theater's most famous and moving songs.)
I predict no Tony nomination, but respectful and respectable reviews. |
