I've always been fascinated by the original plan for THE APPLE TREE, in which the three main roles were Man, Woman, and Devil in each of the three stories - long lost sight of by the time the show reached New York, for a variety of reasons. Not only was YOUNG GOODMAN BROWN replaced by THE LADY OR THE TIGER, but Bruce Jay Freedman's very funny story SHOW BIZ CONNECTIONS was replaced by PASSIONELLA. Have often wanted to ask Sheldon Harnick how far the team had gotten with the Hawthorne and Freedman stories, & am very sorry to hear (via AlanScott post below) that there's so little Goodman Brown material in the archive.

I assume btw that Harnick has a great admiration for Hawthorne. He also wrote a libretto for Jack Beeson's opera version of the Hawthorne short story DR. HEIDEGGER'S EXPERIMENT. it's very good and has been recorded. (Link below.)
