Opened 25 (!) years ago today, and still a fav of mine after all those years. Missing those neon spider webs above 44th street!
-Chita in a performance for the ages
-Brent Carver, then Jeff Hyslop, then Juan Chioran on the road doing us Canadians proud
-7 Tonys (nothing to sneeze at)
-two cast recordings, a road tour that lasted for a year and a half, plus 900 performances on Broadway, and international re-productions
so why does it feel somewhat like a forgotten show? it doesn't get done terribly often, and despite a rich score there are no stand out songs that are a part of everyone's repertoire or pop regularly in concert. Even in the Kander and Ebb oeuvre, it gets glossed over.....and ditto Hal Prince. If a revival ever happens, I'd like to see Sara Ramirez's Aurora. Is Raul Esparza too old for Valentin? Is Robin de Jesus too young for Molina? |
