It seems a good time to again link the films that were made of the two big ballets during the run of the original production. These were filmed on the stage of the Majestic, one night after a performance, with just piano accompaniment. Someone has re-upped the second-act ballet elsewhere on youtube with an added orchestral accompaniment, but I prefer to watch it with what the dancers performed to as the filming was done.

When the second-act ballet was shown a few years ago at the Paley Center, it was explained that one of the dancers involved refused to allow the films to be shown and so for years they stayed at the R and H Org, not viewed by anyone (except perhaps employees). Whoever it was who refused, I presume it was not Bambi Linn, who was at the Paley Center that afternoon, and participated in a very interesting discussion with Gemze de Lappe and Mary Grover (who played Julie in the Armstrong-Goulet TV Carousel, also shown that day).

This will take you to the second-act ballet.

This will take you to the "Hornpipe."

Also quite fascinating is a video that can be viewed at the Library for the Performing Arts, in the research area on the third floor. I'm linking the NYPL page on that one below. The video not only preserves the choreography, we also watch and hear de Mille and de Lappe coach the dancers, with de Lappe demonstrating sometimes, and both of them explaining at points what specific movements represent, what is going on for the characters and, among other things, how the "Hornpipe" relates to the themes of the show.
