| Comparing McMillan to deMille is comparing apples to orange but I love McMillan's choreography here. It's as character based as deMille's choreography but it uses a more traditional set of ballet gestures. It also seems to have an overall sense of form that deMille's choreography lacks. And deMille's gosh-oh-golly rusticity is grating to me, a bit of an imposition on the characters. Perhaps McMillan errs too much in the opposite direction, into over-refinement. But I like how McMillan gets to the heart of the story's theme of cruelty vs tenderness in a very direct and physical way. |
