In both Carousel and Liliom, it's a slap of the hand.
My memory is that in the Dances of Carousel video, de Mille says of the "Hornpipe" something to the effect that it's about how women are always trying to domesticate men, who always want to run away from marriage, settling down, etc. And she says that it's what the show is about. |
