| I was at the NYCB Spring Gala on Thursday, which was the "Tribute to Robbins." This first three you list (The Four Seasons, Circus Polka, A Suite of Dances), which were actual Robbins ballets, were terrific. They showed the depth and variety of Robbins's choreography. The new Justin Peck ballet, Easy, danced to an early Bernstein jazz piece, was also fun. However, Something to Dance About, which was Warren Carlyle's compendium of dances from Robbins's Broadway oeuvre, was a mess. For me, only the beginning segment from On the Town was worth seeing. the rest were incoherent snippets. Sometimes incongruously paired, such as having the "Mr. Monotony" pas-de-duex danced while a bad singer in a bad ballgown sang "The Music That Makes Me Dance." |
